I am having a bass built and wondering one thing about the nature of a fretless fingerboard. Forgive me if I missed a thread about this; looked and did not find. Is it "better" to have an unlined f.b. as opposed to a lined? Are there any tonal bugaboos with lines if done well? Over time is there a problem with any creep of the lines as to need a "fretline dressing"?

I've never heard of any problems like except occasionally with really poorly lined necks where the lines will pop up and cause high spots, buzzing, etc.

  3. I started with an unlined and later went to a lined. Just easier to play for me. I've had no trouble with the lines themselves(All-Parts lined ebony).
