Just got my Brice fretless and this is my first fretless, so I have a few questions.

I tried the search, but couldn't seem to find what I was looking for.

Is it normal for the strings to leave marks of the fretboard? These are flatwounds and I don't plan on using rounds for this bass.

This has a rosewood board and since it's a cheaper bass, I'm wondering if the higher end basses with rosewood also leave marks.

Should I put some sort of protection on it?
I've read about the epoxy deal and I'm not going near that. Just looking for some sort of wood protectant.

As long as there is physical contact, there will be some marks, even on much harder woods such as ebony. Don't worry too much about that - with flatwounds, it will take years before you might have to re-sand or re-plane the fingerboard.
