Fretless piccolo?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Peter McFerrin, Nov 28, 2003.

  1. Anyone ever strung their fretless as a piccolo bass? I've been playing a lot of guitar lately and have had the itch to try playing my fretless 4 an octave up. I figure that some Eberhard Weber-esque sounds could be obtained, which could be cool.

for a while anyway. When it left Carl Thompson's shop, it was tuned an octave up.

I guess he strings it standard now though...

I like to only play the octave strings on my Curbow 8 string fretless. It sounds great.

I am going to have the fretboard planed on my first Curbow fretless, and put octave strings on it since I've got so many fretlesses right now, too.

Go for it--I think you'll dig it. I recommend the Ken Smith Piccolo strings from www.juststrings.com. I think they are $16, so it's not a major investment to see if you like it, or not, either.
