I recently added a Godin A4 fretless to my stable of basses, and I've found that it responds to changes in how the right hand plays more than fretted. I find I'm plucking harder to get the tonality I want. Not that this is bad, I generally play pretty lightly and let the amp do the work, so it's just a subtle change. I'm curious if anyone else notices a difference on fretless?

  2. I find the reverse- I pluck more softly on fretless (also I like the action on fretless lower than on fretted)-

on fretted I pluck with fingertips more perpendicular to the string to get more attack,
on fretless a more stroking motion with the fingertips.

also on fretless I play more with two fingers than with three, as it's difficult to get the softer attack from the ring finger due to it being shorter than the middle finger.
