I'd like to try the epoxy fretless 'a la Jaco' but not on anything too expensive. A battered G&L or Stingray fretless with worn fretboard maybe? Or maybe fretted to start?
Where would I look for tatty name basses please?

If you're looking for something tatty, maybe go to a pawn shop and see what you can dig up. I'd most likely go to a music store and get something cheap (even a Squier Jazz bass if it's a Jaco experiment, you can always mod it as you see fit).

Failing that, it never hurts to cheack out the TB "for sale" section.
