how would I go about turning a freted bass into a fretless.
Not very difficult as long as your fretboard is not coated.
You need to gently pull the frets away (after heating them with the tip of a soldering iron) with a plyer. Some frets are easier to slide away with a gouge and a small hammer.
Then you have to fill the fretslots.
You can use putty (not recommended) or classic guitar bindings (by the roll at www.stewmac.com).
You can apply lacquer if you have a soft fretboard (rosewood)
