can anyone suggest any recordings where you can hear a distinct fretted jazz bass with flatwound strings? I know flatwounds were popular in the motown era but i hear most motown bassists used a p bass? The reason im asking is because i just ordered some flatwounds and I'd kinda like to know what kind of sound to anticipate and how much of a diff it will be from using standard roundwood strings.
I believe that "Lemon Song" by Led Zeppelin was played by John Paul Jones on a Jazz with flats, Labellas, if I remember correctly. I think he played most of the time with flatwounds.
Not trying to promote but I've got a recording of me doing a solo performance on a fretted flatwound bass. I love em they're just so smooth. My teacher put me on to them after I listened to Jaco Pastorious and started praticing like crazy. Like finger bleeding can't stop or I die type crazy. Flatwounds stop that problem though i would like to hear it without the frets. I have a little problem with fret noise but I think that's more my tech. Ummm.. don't know to many commercial recordings but check out www.mp3.com.au/jimmyquickfingers and keep hitting them strings! J Q F Jimmy Quick Fingers
