fretted to fretless conversion

    are there any major drawbacks to pulling a Jaco and taking the frets off and making a bass fretless?

    Better to buy a fretless neck and swap. That way, you can always go back if you want.

    Unless it's a very cheap bass or for some reason you cannot get a replacement neck. Also, a quick search will yield TONS of threads on defretting; it's nearly as popular a subject as *best bass/amp/strings/tutu for metal* or *P vz s J vs TB vs STD*.
