The bass has an Eb neck, and has never had any cracks or even an open seam. This bass got me through my undergrad at the University of North Texas and several years of playing in regional symphonies.

This would be a great bass for an advanced high school student, someone majoring in music education, or someone playing in a community orchestra.

  5. Just curious because I have one of the Wilfer Conservatories from Lemur (basically the same as a Model 10). Where are you measuring rib depth, and are you including the top and back plates in the measurement? My Wilfer depth comes in at 9" including the plates.

I wish I could afford another. Would love to have a gut Wilfer as a back up. Hope your sale goes well.

I'll have to double check the measurements, as I didn't do the measuring. The measurements were done by luthier Arnold Schnitzer when I had him write up an appraisal a few years ago. It is pretty much the same as the Conservatory though (I'm sure Lemur worked a deal to get their own model).

I did have Arnold do a couple of upgrades to it (not sure if Lemur does these on the Conservatory models or just sell them stock). He put on a better nut, aircraft cable (instead of the brass wire) tailpiece wire, and put on leather bumpers.

  7. Lemur advertises that they had the dimensions enhanced, but I've always been curious if that was just a marketing statement (nothing against Lemur...business being business and all).

I always measure rib depth without the top and back plates.

    Thanks for the clarification Arnold!

Here's the specs listed for the Wilfer Conservatory as listed at Lemur, they're pretty comparable:
    Specifications (in inches)
    Upper Bout: 19 1/4
    Lower Bout: 26
Rib Depth (incl top & back): 8 1/4
    String Length: 41

The one big difference I can see between the two is the Conservatory doesn't have the "band" of wood on the rib edges that the Model 10 does. I'm sure there's an official term for this.......

One more upgrade that I forgot about........

The endpin was turned around to allow it to be removed to use a wheel. It's 5/8" tubular steel, so the screw/plug had to be adjusted to sit on the "G" side to allow the endpin to be pulled out.

Wheel not included though..........I already got a new shaft to fit my "new" 150+ year old bass :)
