    The Story:
I searched long and hard for this bass. My only reason for selling is that I managed to get a US hollowbody and my wife has this crazy idea that I don't need two.

You've probably seen comments in threads saying that when comparing Skylines to US Laklands, the hollowbodies, particularly the early ones, seem to come closest in quality. Having the good fortune to have both a MIK and US, I can affirm that they are indeed neck and neck. Pun intended.

    Health Check:
On March 16, I took this bass to Carl Pedigo (aka Chicago Bass Doctor, aka Lakland master luthier) for setup and inspection. He made minor tweaks to the bridge for intonation, said it needed nothing else, and so refused to charge for anything.

Some highlights of this MIK Skyline:
    • Candy Apple Red finish. (Rare finish compared to Inca Silver)
    • Equipped with Bartolini pickups
    • Controls are Volume/Volume/Tone/Tone and Coil Tap switch
    • Very nice striping/figuring in the rosewood fretboard (Uncommon in Skylines)
    • Nut width is 1 5/8".
    • Weight is around 9-9.5 lbs using bathroom scale method.
    • Custom tortoiseshell pickguard and white perloid truss cover.
    • Dunlop straplock buttons installed (Can find spare strap ends in my parts drawer if buyer needs.)
    • Strung with Circle K hybrid nickel/steel strings. More info here: About Circle K Strings and here: TB Circle K thread.
    • Includes a set of tapewound strings that brings out the woody vintage acoustic tone even further if that's your preference.
    • Includes a gig bag that is intended primarily for shipping protection.

    • Has the "standard" Skyline finish crack on just one side of the neck pocket. Does not have the other common finish cracks on other side, or between the neck and neck pickup. (I inquired about this with Carl Pedigo, he said they see it on nearly all Skyline hollowbodies but have never been able to figure out why it happens.)
    • Minor finish swirling on back of body, small dings/scratches that one might expect from a 10-year old bass that's been played but has been well cared for.

    The Fine Print:
PayPal only. Continental US only. Strongly prefer to ship to PayPal verified shipping address.
    $965 plus actual shipping.
Shipping info: It will ship from zip 60453. The package is 49x22x8 and 28 pounds. Weight is due to a sturdy wood frame that will protect the heck out of this bass.
Probably not, but feel free to let me know what you've got. No 5-strings please.

And, of course, the bass pr0n:

    Small finish crack:

  2. The chrome pickup surrounds look a little "plasticy"... is that just a photo artifact or does it have something to do with the pickguard?

Also, please check out my thread here and let me know what you think: WTB/WTT for Lakie HB

Pretty sure I owned this bass last year. It was magic!! I have a us with barts and I liked the way this one sounded better. Beautiful bass.

It could be photo artifacts, I'm not the best photographer and let my computer handle resizing with defaults. I don't think it has anything to do with the pickguard, but the surrounds might be a chromed plastic. I compared visually and by touch to my US hollowbody and they seem about the same. I'm not taking either bass apart for further analysis, but in person they look fine to my subjective eye.

That's a nice looking bass. I'm not a Fender guy, or a P-bass guy, but I must say I'm curious. I'd prefer to sell at this point, but I might PM for more details.

Wonderful bass but have to pass. I used to have one but traded up to my US 4-94.

I own one of these 1st year Skylines (avatar) & the necks on these early ones are superb. :bassist:
Also the pickup surrounds chromed metal not plastic, this is a great price & shouldn't last long.

I REALLY miss my USA CAR Lakland Hollowbody. The barts are the bomb on these basses. This would be mine if I wasn't in the middle of a renovation.

    Lakland CAR is crazy nice!

Also - Skyline HBs are the models that are closest to thier US counterparts of any Lakland bass!

With a little overdrive, flatwounds, and palm muting or other bridge mute, you can get a killer upright-like tone with this bass, even without being fretless!

Here's a sample pulled from a recording of my blues band a few weeks back. Do forgive my playing.

Signal chain: Lakland HB w/ JO flats into Electronix Submarine into [sfx] Red Dragon for a touch of OD, into Eden Metro combo. Recorded on a Sony "voice memo" type mp3 recorder that was sitting on the singer's music stand about 12 feet from my amp.

    Attached Files:

  15. I just received one almost exactly like this in a trade and I must say this is an absolutely magnificent bass!! Even the high notes on the G string have real body to them! Highly recommended.
