The quest to cut down from 18 basses to just 2 continues.

Next up. I've got bass that I bought in a small music shop in Montreal back in 1995. It was built by a guy named Mike Ostrzenski using pretty exotic woods:

    • Neck: wenge and purpleheart multi-laminate
    • Board: wenge
    • Body: walnut
    • Top: zebrano with ebony inlay
The "pickguard" is actually a disc of ebony inlaid flush into the top. The whole thing is satin finished in tung oil. Pickups are Bartolini J-J with passive vol/vol/tone controls. Bridge is a Schaller recessed into the top and scalloped at the tail end. Tuners are Hipshot Ultralights (thanks, Sheldon Dingwall!)

The fretwork and setup were done by La Lutherie MF of Montreal. It has a very low action and plays like a dream. Very thin, light, and well-balanced sitting or standing. The tone is even and "piano-like" across all 5 strings. I would call it a "full spectrum" tone: strong fundamental without the barking/honky mids you'd generally associate with a wenge neck. Thunderous low-B.

    IMPORTANT

As you can tell from the pictures, this bass is a bit rough around the edges. The neck is really a work of art, but the rest of the woodwork is NOT what you'd expect from a top-level custom builder. Thanks to the folks at La Lutherie MF who spent a lot of time on fretwork, setup, and finishing, it plays and sounds like a dream. But if you want perfection, look elsewhere.

That's why I'm setting the price to a very low $635 shipped including a Tolex hardshell case, Schaller strap locks, and custom suede strap. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Willing to entertain fair offers for quick sale. NYC members are welcome to give the bass a test-drive. You'll like what you see, feel, and hear.

What's the function of the four small screws on the back?

It's adjustable with the Schaller roller bridge.

    Standard 34" scale.

They're ebony plugs. The body is very, very thin. So thin that it was hard to get the pickups set low enough in the body for my taste. The guys at La Lutherie MF put those dowels in so that the neck pickup screw had a few more turns to really hold it in place.

No real nut. It's got a zero fret with a string spacer (made of wenge) behind it.

I've gotten a few requests for pics of the headstock. Here you go...
