Ahem! And what string might THAT be?!!! :D

I'm still wondering what year it is. I've tried zooming the photos of the serial number, but I can't read it.

  8. The serial number on this bass is 540504, hope this helps! There has been interest but as of now it's still available.

Thanks. 2004. Same year as my BN5.

George used to make the basses with hum canceling mode as a default and pull up for single coil, then switched it so that knob down was single coil mode and pulled up is hum canceling.

This one is probably knob down for hum canceling, but I thought I should confirm that with you as well... and keep your bass at the top of the heap! ;-)

  11. I happened to put the bass up at bass central for consignment recently but didn't get responses fast enough (probably because it was up for a hefty price) so I explored other ways of trying to sell and figured talkbass would be a great way. Hope this helps!

Tom, I've never understood how to decypher the the serial#
to come up with the build year. Could you explain, please?

I don't know the cipher myself, but I've been told the LAST TWO DIGITS are the year it was built, which I can verify with my own three F-bass... all of them were built in the same year as the last two digits of their serial numbers.

  14. Lots of interest but still available.

I wonder if everyone realizes what a bargain this bass is. If I remember right, mine cost over $6,000 new.

Maybe if you guys heard a BN6... here is a youtube clip of an Fbass BN6 being played with piano and drums.

The pianist is smooth Jazz artist David Benoit, and the bassist is a GREAT player named Dave Hughes, and I don't know the name of the drummer, but it's probably Dave too. :eyebrow:

At any rate, here's hoping this bass finds a great home.

    Hi
It's my understanding that the dating of F Basses works like this:
    Serial # = Number produced / Month / Year.
    ie- # 310199 = 31st Bass produced/ built Jan.(01) / of 1999.

-What I'm unsure of is whether the number recycles to 01 at the start of each month or is a running, accumulative production count for the year.
    I hope this helps.

    It does, thanks.

Since his serial number is: 540504...

I'd guess that the first two digits, in this case "54," is how many basses made that year (2004), rather than that month (05), because it would blow my mind if George were making 54 basses a year!

But hey, who know? George has blown my mind plenty of times before! :bassist:

So an 030801 would have been built in August of 2001? Thanks guys!

Bump for a VERY beautiful looking bass. If I didn't already have a BN6 I would have been on this one in a heart beat.

Technically, I think the serial # reflects the month the order was received for the bass, maybe a little before the build in some cases.

    Oo! Good point.

So the number is the month of conception, not birth!
