    Price drop to $775 shipped!

    Hello everyone.

Up on the block today I've got my beloved ASAT bass. Her name is Beatrix.

I bought her from eBay in about 2004 from a seller in Hawaii who had the Kahler installed.

It's a 3-bolt neck and the SN (from the neck bolt plate, pic included) is B033478 which, from what I understand, places the date of this bass somewhere in the mid to late 90's.

I posted a thread on this bass a couple weeks back asking about an issue I was having with the treble pot. Turns out I'm just a moron and the "issue" was with the bass pot: when I rolled off the bass the volume of the guitar lowered. I have since found out that this is the norm for G&L basses (from posting the issue at bassesbyleo.com). I am posting this to be sure that this is common and also to address any questions y'all may have in regards to this. I don't want to make a shady deal, so if you have questions please ask!

The finish on this bass is still in fantastic shape, however, the previous owner played with a pick and there's some rash under the G string. It doesn't go through the finish, but it's there. I included a picture that tried to show it. Other than that the finish is wonderful.

The neck is in great shape. There are three marks on it and I've tried to include photos of them: on the headstock there is what looks to be a couple small bits of cymbal rash, and on the back of the neck there are three little indentations. It looks like the previous owner leaned it up against a rounded off table or something. I can't feel them when I'm playing playing as they're on the very middle of the back of the neck, but if you rub your hand up and down you can feel them.

As far as the neck number I am not 100% sure. I don't have the measurements but I can update this post with the nut width when I get home tonight. Edit: the neck is 1.5" at the nut.

Also, I no longer have the original strap pegs (they were misplaced in one of my multiple moves, took them off to put strap locks on) but the bass will ship with black Schaller strap locks.

To the best of my knowledge these are the only issues, and they are cosmetic only.

As for why I am selling this bass: it was a tough decision. This was the first "real" bass that I owned. I scrimped and saved and this was what I came up with, so it has a lot of sentimental value to it. But she needs a good home where she will be played.

If you know G&L's, you know the pups are *HOT*. And that's the main reason she doesn't get much play. I have focused in on my voice and as much as I try and get it out of the G&L I just can't find it, which is very unfortunate.

I am also in the market for another amp. My 400+ is going to need to be re-tubed pretty soon and I would like to have a backup/other option to the "Beast."

Because of this the only trade I'll really consider is a light and powerful amp. I'm selling this bass to finance a ShuttleMAX 9.2, so that's probably the only trade I'll take (along with some cash/other goodies, most likely), but who knows. Throw in the bait and see if I bite. (Edit: I'm also interested in Stingrays, so if you would like to make an offer please let me know!)

I would *LOVE* for this to be a local sale. I would love for you to be able to try out this bass before buying, so if you're local (I'm in North OC, so Orange County, would be easy, but LA, SD, Riverside I'd be willing to meet half way).

I will ship this bass and split actual shipping with the buyer.

Any questions? Please ask! Anything I got wrong (I know there are some very knowledgeable folks on here) please let me know! Is my price way out of line? Tell me! I want to be open and honest about this sale.

And finally, after my long winded intro, here are some photos. If you have any requests please let me know.

  2. A bump and an update:

To answer some questions I received through PM's:

In order to install the Kahler tremolo the body had to be routed in to. The route does not go all the way through the bass, but taking the Kahler off and replacing it with a G&L bridge would require some pretty decent woodworking filling the hole it would leave.

The bass weighs 9.6 lbs according to my bathroom scale.

The width at the nut is 1.5''

As far as neck dive goes: I've never had much of an issue with this bass, but this was my primary bass for some time so it could be that I've just learned to deal with it. I'm also tall with wide shoulders so this might help support the bass a bit better than someone with more narrow shoulders.

Also: While going through some things last night I found a bunch of Schaller straplock tops, so a complete pair of black Schaller strap locks will be included with the bass.

Also: I will open this up to be shipped anywhere in the lower 48 and I'll split shipping with the buyer.

Feel free to send me an offer, or, if you've got any other questions please let me know.

interested is there a sound clip ive always been interested in the kahlers and i just love G&ls and tele styles free bump ola

  5. Thanks for the interest! I was just about to come in here and ask about what I was doing wrong ;)

No sound clips, unfortunately. I am currently without a computer at homel, so any recording would likely sound like crap :(

If you'd like me to try I can see if I would be able to record it with the voice recorder on my phone and post it when i get to work on Monday.

    Thanks for the bump!

  6. Sunday afternoon bump.

Someone help me out here. What am I doing wrong? Am I asking way too much? Or is nobody just interested?

    Help a brother out!

Its actually a very cool bass but for me the Kahler is the issue. If I new I could slap the orig G&L bridge back on without too much trouble/residual damage, it would be a contender, but that's just me.

Funky whammy-bass: G&L meets Claypool! How's the tuning stability with the whammy? How's the sustain when not "whamming"?

  10. Thanks guys!

The Kahler bridge itself works very well in terms of just acting as a regular ol' bridge. Sustain is perfectly good and to be honest I rarely use the trem on it. I've never noticed anything "off" with it.

As far as tuning stability: for dive bombs it stays pretty much in tune. For some cool vibrato it's fine was well, pulling up lightly and pressing down. But if you really crank up on it you'll pull it completely out of tune, but I suppose that's to be expected. You can get a feel for where you need to be to keep the tuning in check.

Hope this helps out, it's a bit tough to explain, but essentially stretching the strings out is going to pull them out of tune. Use it as you would a finger bend and you'll be fine.

This is actually a perfect candidate for a tremolo! A straight-pull headstock with minimal tilt is exactly what you want for a tremolo. Some graphite powder in the nut slots and a roller string tree over the D & G strings would probably allow you to really rip on the trem and remain in tune. I've had several Kahler equipped basses that I could really dive bomb and bend up on, and still remain in tune.

Don't forget, Kahler trems also have a set screw that can be adjusted to only allow for diving but no pulling up. So this doesn't always have to be a fully floating bridge.

Bump for an awesome whammy bass!

  12. wish i had the loot right now..
bump for the sweet whammy bass

  13. Bump!

    Looking for:

    Cash

    GK MB800
    Stingray 4H

    +/- cash where necessary.

If you're lookin for a face-melter, this bass is it!

  14. Alright guys, I really would love to move this.

$775 gets you a beautiful G&L with an original Kahler tremolo. A fun, interesting bass that is a great player and a head turner.

It pains me a bit to go this low but I just bought the girlfriend a ring and I'm looking to put a little bit of money back in to the coffers.

Still open to the previously mentioned trades as well, but keep in mind that I would consider the trade value to be higher than what I'm asking for in cash.
