I got these on a whim after having a Lado Studio 4 string many years ago and regretting selling it. Now I have to opportunity to regret selling these! Seriously, I need the cash, but I know I'll regret it.

The first one is the 6 string. This is an amazing 1995 (so I was told) Lado Studio 606 Custom from Joe Kovacic.

    Specs:

    - Ser # CDN-STUDIO-606W-229
    - 34" scale 5-piece NT (Flamed Maple/Purpleheart/Wenge/PH/Fl Mple) neck.
    - Purpleheart stringers btn neck and body wings
    - Flamed Walnut top over Flamed Maple core w/ Purpleheart back
    - Black hardware w/ EDIT: 16mm Not 17mm spacing at bridge
    - 3 1/4" at 24th fret, 2 3/8" at the graphite nut
    - Gaboon Ebony board w/ great frets
    - Bartolini humbuckers w/ Bart TCT 3-band preamp (and extra 'black box')
    - HSC with beat up tolex (no cracks or structural breaks)
    - Bathroom scale weight is 11-12lbs. (This thing is ALL heavy hardwoods!!)

The condition is great. It has a dimple in the headstock above the 'L'. There is thumb wear between the pickups and wear around the master vol knob. The rest of the bass is pretty darn good, but the oil finish is a bit dirty.
This is a classy, VERY well constructed bass with a very comfortable flat neck and great tone.

My price is $1300 $1200 plus shipping anywhere.

The second is the Studio 5 string.

    Specs:

    - Ser # CDN-STUDIO-605-2132
    - 34" scale 5-piece NT Flamed Maple & Purpleheart neck.
    - Purpleheart and Flamed Maple stringers btn neck and body wings
    - A beautiful rich purply-red Purpleheart top over Flamed Maple core w/ a gorgeously grained Mahogany/Sapele back. The pics don’t do it justice!
    - Gold hardware w/ 17mm spacing at bridge
    - High-gloss thick clear coat.
    - 2 15/16" at 24th fret, 2" at the nut
    - Gaboon Ebony board
    - Bartolini humbuckers w/ Bart TCT 3-band preamp (and extra 'black box')
    - Bathroom scale weight is 10-11lbs. (This thing is ALL heavy hardwoods too!!!)

The condition is great. It has a slight scuff in the clear coat on the bottom edge of the lower horn. There is also a much less significant scuff on the lower edge by the jack. Lastly, there are 3 Small dimples- one on top by armrest, one on the edge just below knobs, and the other on the top edge of the upper horn.

This is a beautifully built and amazing sounding example of Joe’s work.

My price is $1100 $1000 plus shipping anywhere.

It's a terrible thing that Joe's instruments aren't more well-known. They are top notch in tone, construction, and feel. They are some of the most versatile basses I've ever played. They can do it all from hard rock, to slap 'n pop, to smooth mellow, & warm. They are a bit brighter and punchier than most Bartolini equipped basses, probably because of the woods used. Flamed Maple, Purpleheart, and Walnut are very dense woods, and stunningly beautiful to boot!

    Thanks

    Dan

I think I answered most of the usual questions in the descriptions (wt, scale, spacing, electronics, etc..) so read carefully!

That studio 5 string is absolutely beautiful. Possibly the most beautiful non-single cut instrument I've ever seen

  4. Both instruments are stunning! I wish I wasn't Unum Ploid.

Your link for "more pics" of the Studio 5 is bad. Perhaps it's the doubled-up "http://" part? Thought you'd want to know/fix it.

Thanks for catching that. It should work now.

he has done some over-the-top way-too-pimped-out basses over the years, but that 6 is conservative, elegant, and gorgeous. I just bought a bass, though.

    Cheers,

I forgot to mention I put new sets of strings on both these (D'Addarrios). Each bass has about 2 hours on the new strings- just enough to break them in.

    NO LADO LOVE????

How about this addition....prices are slightly negotiable.

  10. More like NO LADO CASH!

...that is, even though these seem to be quite reasonably priced. If only I were gainfully employed!

First and ONLY price drops on these. I knocked them down $100 EACH. This hurts!

Or..... if you buy both of them, I'll even take another $100 off! $2100 for both! (I'm hoping no one is wealthy enough or insane enough to do that, cuz that's another $100 I need!!! But, if it helps them sell.....)

The spacing measurements seem unusual to me. Neck width at the nut (2") and 24th fret (2 15/16") are fairly wide but the 17mm string spacing at the bridge is very narrow. Are you certain of those values? By comparison, a 17.5mm Pedulla Thunderbass has specs of 1 7/8", 2 3/4" and 17.5mm, respectively.

Does the 5-stringer come with a case?

    Thanks.

I have a no-name gigbag for the 5 string. Although, I'll include a hard case from another one of my basses for $35.

As for measurements, I just checked all the measurements with a set of calipers. They are as follows:

    5 String:
    - 2" Nut width (not string spacing at nut)
    - 3" 24th fret width
    - 17mm spacing at bridge saddles

    6 String:
    - 2.4 Nut
    - 3.25" 24th
    - 16mm spacing

SO, the spacing is on the 6 string 16mm, NOT 17mm. Thanks for catching that Travis.

And also note, the 5 string has 3-way adjustable saddles. You can vary string spacing on that by about 1mm. I think it each saddle is set in the middle of each slot right now.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Bump.

Note on the narrower string spacings....Unless you do a lot of slap 'n pop, narrow spacing is great. You'd be surprised at how much it helps with your fingering/picking speed. Myung used a narrower spacing on his Yamahas (particularly his RBXJM2) for a reason!

Just found some great info and back story on Joe Kovacic and Lado Guitars:

    http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Lado_Guitars

Having worked for/with Turner/Gibson and CF Martin, that should show that Joe knows what he's doing and builds finely crafted instruments!

Ok, big bummer....I just got these Lados out for the first time in about 2 months. I tuned them up and the 5 string had some buzz on the 5th/6th frets on the A, D, & G string. I checked the neck and it was fairly straight. This means it could use a fret dressing. I looked very closely at the frets, and it appears as if they've been leveled before. There's still meat left on them, but if you want the absolute lowest action (like I like), then the FIVE string could use a dressing, particularly the 5th and 6th frets. I called around and this could be done for $40-$70. I'm knocking $100 off to make sure I get a happy customer. This hurts, but I'm not out to screw anybody. Hopefully honesty and full disclosure are appreciated on here! I may go get this done myself soon, but in the mean time, if you have your own tech that you prefer, you get a $100 discount. Otherwise, the price will go back up to the $1000.

    Thanks guys.
