    Hello TB'ers,

This is a fully carved Mittenwald/German bass, made in 1976 by the workshop of Mathias Thoma. I bought this bass in the fall after trying out about 20 instruments in the $5-10K range, including Juzek & Wilfer basses. I had Jeff Bollbach put a thick new ebony fingerboard on it, a new bridge, and a high quality (and expensive) New Harmony Carbon Fiber endpin (details). He also fitted the bass with a Full Circle pickup and a new set of Spirocore Medium strings.

This bass sounds awesome for jazz and with the right strings would likely be an excellent classical instrument as well. Jeff's setup is second to none and the bass is clear, even and projecting from bottom to top.

I also have a formal appraisal for the bass from the Kolstein shop where the previous owner purchased it back in 1991 (which values the bass at $6K back then!)

String length is 41", more measurements are listed on the appraisal sheet attached below.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Bass is conveniently located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan - anyone who is interested is welcome to try it out.

Also, it should be noted that this bass has nothing to do with some inexpensive instruments currently being sold under the Mathias Thoma label - much like the fake Stradivarius label found in countless violins.

A very similar German-made Thoma bass sold here for over $6K: Link

And for what it's worth - Tim Lefebvre owns one: Link

    nice bass.

    good price.

nobody sets a bass up the way jeff does.

and those are hands down the best endpins in the world.
