I need some inspiration. Can someone recomend some cds with some modern sounding funk or jazz influenced music- not smooth jazz. I dig old school funk and classic jazz but I'm looking for something more "modern". I also play 5 string so I would be interested in checking out 5 string players. I'm not so much into pop stuff i.e. chilli peppers or dave mathews band etc. Lately I've been listening to some Jaco and I got this Wayne Krantz cd w/Lincoln Goines that is pretty killin'. Any newer bands/players out there along these lines that I should check out?

    ...anything with Gary Willis-
The various Tribal Tech albums & Willis' two solo discs(No Sweat and Bent).

What Krantz disc do you have...Two Drink Minimum? That is, IMO, a happenin' Jazz-Rock trio disc(Danzinger is baaaddd!). ;)

You could also check out Mike Stern's "Play", a very good album, IMO. Lincoln Goines sounds like he's playing a 5-string bass on that one.

Yeah JimK Its Two Drink Minimum- I agree - a smokin cd. I have yet to check out anything else from Krantz. I have heard that this one is his best with this group. I love how the groove is constantly being stretched and changed without loosing the pulse.

A couple more 5-string electric "Jazzers"-
    1)Jimmy Johnson
...his stuff with Alan Holdsworth(Metal Fatigue), Chad Wacxkerman(Forty Reasons, The View), or Billy Childs(His April Touch).

    2)Tom Kennedy
...his stuff with Billy Connors(The Assembler) & Dave Weckl(Synergy, etc).

    3)Jimmy Haslip-
...The Yellowjackets, Bob Mintzer, solo albums...

I could add a couple of my current favourite Jazz/Funk albums with 5-string electric bass players :

    Esprit by Franc 'O Shea
    Focused by Billy Cobham

More Jazz than funk but some great bass playing!
