If a traditional classic rock band that yes, plays Mustang Sally, Sweet Home Alabama, Sweet Caroline and some of the other typical cheesy songs wanted to add some funky songs that were not Play that Funky Music what do you thing would go over well.

You can take a funk approach to a lot of rock tunes. I've done "Long Train Running" that way and that's just one example. "It Your Thing" by the Isley Bros. is core funk tune. Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" would be more of a Motown funkified tune. Look at some Philly Soul tunes and James Brown stuff as well. You'll find good funk tunes there.

I'm thinking more along the lines of -

    Super Freak
    Rock Steady - Aretha
    Low Ride - War
Get Ready - Temptations or Rare Earth
    ...

Thanks - Superstition might be a good one but I don't consider LTR funky. Maybe a bit of syncopated rhythm but not really funky to me.

Miss You by the Stones can get pretty greasy if you let it. But almost any song with a good beat and a strong bass line can be made funky. We've played funky versions of Down By The River, for instance. Not really a terribly upbeat song to start with, but anything is possible.

Almost anything by the Temptations, James Brown, etc.

The cover version isn't. That's why I suggested making it so. That's how we managed it in two different bands.

It's just taking a well known tune and reworking it with a different feel and Long Train Running is one that can work that way. IMHO Funk is about style and attitude so you can take some rock tunes and dial them in that direction.

"Josie" by Steely Dan is a funkified kind of tune. Or look back at the '70s when funk was all over the pop charts.

The thing is I don't know how your band is configured or what you all are capable of so I'm just throwing out ideas.

  10. Tom Jones' version of Come Together (which, by the way, is the only acceptable version of Come Together).

Here's an example of "It's Your Thing" done by a band with no horns or keys. Just guitars, drums, and bass. Now imagine a song like Long Train Running or any other tune that may fit the groove done this way. But as it stands "It's Your Thing" is a great example of a tune any band can perform this way if they can capture this "feel".
