These look rather interesting. OK, I give, what does ASAT stand for? My first guess - As Same As Telecaster.
All Sweet All the Time! I'd love to have an ASAT...I can't justify spending $3000 AU for one prices in Australia, are too high... I think I'll have to build a warmoth, instead
Actually it stands for "Anti Satellite". Much of the early G&L stuff had military themed names. The urban myth is that is stands for After Strat, After Tele but that is untrue. I just got one in August & love it. It's quickly become my #1 bass. So many tonal options: vintage P, jazz, modern Fender, Stingray, Rick clank & an ASAT tone that is all it's own. The passive tones sound as good or better than the active ones. It's the same guts as their L2000 bass. Beautiful fit & finish & the neck (jazz width) is like butter. If I had to come up with a complaint it'd have to be a slight case of neck dive, but hell - I own a T-Bird too...not a big enough issue to be a deal breaker. I used to think that G&Ls were a well kept secret, but it seems recently that the word is out!
There is a guy who makes an attachment to help prevent the neck dive. I think he visits here from time to time... also he can be found on the G&L Dudepit
Yeah, I'm a member of the Dudepit & saw that contraption. I'm sure it works, but it's a little too wacky looking for me. Like I said, the neck dive isn't bad enough (for me anyway) to do the mod.
I've never played any G&L basses, but I think I'm going to buy an L-2500 Tribute as soon as Musiciansfriend gets them back in stock. Mike
Hi Mike Several shops on 48th street carry and have instock G&L Basses , it might be worth your time to check them out first.
