G&L fan base... how's your knobs?

  2. Removed them. Easy as 1, 2, 3.

  3. Tried to remove them. Calculus was easier.

As of late, there's been a lot of heat directed toward BBE Sound/G&L regarding their quality control measures... Tributes, Build To Order, Custom Shop... doesn't matter, it's usually across the board.

I, along with several owners of G&L's (both new and used), have experienced what I refer to as, 'The Incredible Hulk Installed My Control Knob' syndrome. My '19 BTO SB-2T pot knobs could not be removed... dealer tried... no dice... G&L tried (you know, the ones who put them on)... no dice.

Original pickguard and pots had to be scrapped... new pickguard, new pots and rewired... on a brand new bass.

Please share your experiences, if any, with this highly unusual phenomena of using a sledgehammer to install what should be tightened with an allen wrench.

Bonus points for the build year of the bass, and whether it was purchased new or used!

Disclaimer: Not a G&L bashing thread! My SB-2T isn't going anywhere. The finish is awesome (Spanish Copper Metallic), love the neck, and y'all know about the MFD's.

My JB-2 had no issues, although I was considering replacing the stock pickups with Nordstrands but ended up giving the bass to a friend so he could give the bass to his grandson. As to knobs>

All my G&L basses were acquired while the Incredible Hulk was still working at Marvel Comics, so no problems hete6.

    *here.

hete6 is an autocorrect due to the other language I speak which is comprised of letters and numbers.

  6. I've had two G&L's where they would not come off, and Paul definitely had one as well.

I guess I don’t understand the question. Is GL using push-on knobs on some instruments?
    Maybe the import (tribute) line?
My 2 GLs (both US made) came with knobs with set-screws. Loosen them, and the knobs come right off.

Sorry for the confusion, Woody! The dealer and G&L could loosen the set screws, and to my knowledge are not using push to fit knobs (they may have in the past... don't know)... once the set screws were loosened, they were not able to...

... extract the knobs... from the shaft...

Two USA's and a Tribute, then? Years, if known... I don't believe the Tribute was more than a couple of years old.

    The lb is circa 2016-7.
I didn’t get a build sheet with the jb2, and have not taken the neck off to see.
I think the US ones were only made for a few years.

My 2018 Tribute L-2500 has push-on knobs that are near impossible to remove.

My newest 2020 SB-1 has set screw knobs and I have not tried to remove them yet. My five (5!) other G&Ls are 2002 or earlier(2 MIJ & 3 Fullerton) with no issues.

Any evidence they are original to the bass, @fcleff? And thanks for your input!

Older Tribute L-2500 knobs pulled off with minimal effort, no set screws.
