G&L MFD Pickup - Possible to repair/rewind??

I've got one of these in an L1500 bass that is defective - I understand that only one of thw two coils is working. The pickup is also coated in epoxy like the old stingray pups.

Is it possible to have it rewound?

I phoned Bare Knuckle Pickups and they said they had'nt done one before but send it in and they will see what they can do.

Before I do this I just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience with a defective MFD pup and how they solved the problem.

Thanks

replaced it with a brand spankin' new one and sold the old one as a re-winding project. When I first realized there was a problem I tried to fix it and in doing so made it worse. The only thing that could help it was a complete re-wind, but G&L said they didn't do that, and I didn't want to outsource and wait months.

If your pickup is coated in epoxy, forgot repairing it! You would have to chip away at the plastic (as thats pretty much what it is) to get to the coils, and pretty much destroy the pickup in the process. The best thing I can suggest is:

  • Buy a new pickup from G&L
  • Get a new pickup with similar spec and near identical dimensions
  • Get a new pickup custom made

Im sorry to hear about your problem, I dream of owning a G&L L-1500!
