    Hey! I recognize that bass!

I bought it (via ebay?) kept it for a while and sold it (on ebay). At that time I wasn't adjusted to the skinny #6 neck and was still hooked on my L2K with a #5 neck. I wish I still had it.

It had no serial number and speculation from the G&LDP was that it was an "employee bass" put together from parts by a G&L employee. It had fairly large gaps in the neck pocket but they sure didn't affect the sound. There was also speculation the body was maple because of the era and the sound.

I didn't take those pictures, they were from the person I purchased it from. Gee, that's a blast from the past. Now I'm on the lookout for something similar - SB-1 w/#6 rw neck. If anyone has one and wants a metallic gold Climax w/#6 neck let me know.

I sold one recently that looked very similar. I wish they would have made more SB-1s with the #6 neck too. Unbeatable combination.

  4. im not sure you had the same bass, i sold mine sometime in like 2001 to a dude in japan for a nice profit and as far as i can remember it had a serial number

damn, i really want it back!

  5. actually, now that i think about it the bass was either dated as an '86 or an '89

Positive. Although I didn't take the pics I remember that blue blanket. Here's the one I found on my hard drive - identical to one of yours:

If senility hasn't completely set in I remember a chrome neck plate despite the black crinkle everywhere else (including the pickguard which is the coolest pickguard material ever).

I remember thinking the #6 neck was too small and made my hands cramp (now I can't play anything except a #6 neck) and "why have an SB-1 when I can have an L2K that sounds better". My how times change - now I crave that SB-1 (or SB-2) sound and just can't get completely happy with an L2K. C'est la vie.

I'm sorry to hear it went off to Japan since that means I'll never have another chance at it . . . but all the SB-2s I've had since then have really been just as good (just not the "first one" of that type).
