First things first, my crappy ampeg combo amp has no gain knob. The only thing it does have is a built in "SVT" effect, which raises the gain but it also has some stupid emulator effect that makes my tone cheese.

But what I'm really looking for is something to give me a straight up gain boost, similar to the one in an old traynor ts-50b head. It had a boost switch, that boosted the gain I'm guessing, that just made the best distortion ever. Now I'm seriously doubting I'll get a good distortion out of my combo, but I can always try. And return it if it sucks.

Is there anything like what I just retardly described?

yep. Either the Sansamp Bass DI/Driver, or the MXR will do it, plus give you the ability to play with overdrives.

If you want to boost your signal without adding any dirt, just use an equaliser.

The BOSS ODB3 allows you to boost the gain without distortion. Just turn the gain knob up as high as you like, and turn the balance all the way down. This gives a boosted, but undistorted signal.
