Gain unity for active/ passive on-board preamp, or not?

I understand the internal trim pot of active basses increases/ decreases the gain of the active EQ. After some reading, it seems the only difference between those who have a higher gain on their active settings and those who like unity is ultimately personal preference. It would seem to me that having them at unity makes sense for back up purposes and having greater flexibility of tone, but I suppose some like to have greater power going to the front end of their chain.

So, why do you set the trim pot in your active/ passive bass to the settings you have them?
