Gauge of String Cores?

A question for you string experts:

Do string cores vary in gauge/thickness from one manufacturer to another (or from one brand to another from the same manufacturer)? That is to say, is the string core on a 0.120 D'Addario roundwound different from that of a 0.120 TI flat or a .0120 D'Addario slowwound. If so, does that mean that string tension will vary even among strings of the same gauge?
  2. I've just started looking into that. In the last couple of months I've managed to break D'Addario, GHS standard and boomers, as well as ernie ball strings and all of them seem to have the same core diameters. These ranged from .120-.130 for the outer diameter of the low B.
