Gear used on Zeppelin IV

Discussion in 'Recordings [BG]' started by supermetroid, Dec 28, 2002.

  1. John Paul Jones gets a distinctly beefier tone on Zeppelin's fourth album, as compared to their earlier recordings. Does anyone know what he was doing differently? What gear was he using in the studio?

Amps, I couldn't say, but I always thought he was a Jazz bass man. Maybe it's an engineering thing.

  3. If I'm not mistaken he pretty much used his 63 Fender Jazz Bass and Acoustic amps early on in Zeps career before moving on to those 8+ strings (I think they were Alembics).

  4. Hmm, come to think of it, I think I've heard something about him using an 8-string on some of the Zeppelin IV cuts, although I still suspect he used his Fender Jazz on most of those songs.

I thought Heartbreaker off of 2 was 8 string.

On 'Heartbreaker', JPJ ran his bass through a Leslie cabinet to give it that overdriven sound. It was only time he used an effect during the Led Zep days I believe.
