I'm looking at a couple of used local basses that I haven't been able to try yet. They are priced within $200 of each other. The MIA is std burst and maple. Should I expect much difference tonally and quality wise?
Just like ^he^ said... But the only caveat would be that the MIA will have the graphite rods in the neck which will make it very stable in all seasons - The Geddy Lee I had would change with the weather as it was extra thin.
What era is the U.S. Fender from? I'd pick the Geddy over any American Standard/American Series made after 2001.
The American Standard is 2009. It is dry here in the winter and my old Fenders always seem to have to much relief so a good neck is a must. Just to rant a bit I went to the local music store and played a Mexi Geddy Lee with brutally high action. Its not even a valid demo. All of the other Fenders had high action too. The Schector and Warwick I tried had great low action. The Warwick Corvette was very very nice and very very heavy. It was in another league and so was the price tag.
Given it's a 2009 model, I think you'd love that Am.Std. They have the best sound to them, with the proper scooped Jazz "burp." Finishes were purposely made thinner and through-body stringing added, too. Also, the necks are satin lacquered on the back, but glossed fingerboards. Best of all worlds for some people. Post 2012 they added the Custom Shop pickups which are darker and much less defined.
I see it just the opposite, I'd take an American Standard, over a Getty Lee without a second thought. Personal opinion, Am. Std. is a better made bass.
I have a Mexican made Geddy Lee Jazz. I live on Canada's East Coast..just 10 miles from the ocean. The neck on my Geddy has ,,so far been very stable,,no adjustments needed.
I'm in SE Florida, two miles from the Atlantic, with an almost constant sea breeze. No adjustments needed for the Am. Std.'s either. Humidity here runs about, 70 - 85 %.
If the price difference is only $200, then I'd go for the Am. Standard since those are generally higher valued than the GL is.
I must admit I have an American Standard, had it going on 3 weeks now and I can't put it down. I put D'Addario flats on it (45 - 100) and it sounds incredible. I can get from a really snarly growl to a deep bass with punch to a sound similar to how Jaco Pastorious played. It's a truly beautiful instrument.
I'm going out to try the American Std shortly. My '69 has flats and I want something to put round wounds on.
I'd take the MIA jazz...Most of the Geddy's I have tried in music stores have been horribly set up ..but it's a cool neck, and you can feel it's potential..The MIA has the graphite rods, better tuners and a better resale value..IMO..so it's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.
I picked up the MIA for well under $1k. Its a bit darker than I expected but I'll get some new strings on it tomorrow.
USA bass for the reasons above the USA's also have 60's spacing vs. 70's for the GL I believe- 60's is fine for me seeing that a jazz is already such a bright machine.
