Just wondering how this perticular genz benz amp compares to the other two listed here. I have been looking closely at the edens and AMPs, but the Genz Benz has caught my attention lately. Is anybody familiar with these amps tone-wise? They look very solid!
ya, i've tried the others, but tonewise, they don't quite compare, right now i've got a genz benz ls210t, and it sounds great, genz are the way to go!!!
i forgot to mention that i have a GBE ml200 head, wich is basically the same as the 400, just doesn't have the same power, they sound great, they are also very loud!!!
The Genz is nice and has mucho power for it's rating but it does not beat the tone of the BH-420! The BH-420 is the king of tone man!!!! It's no slouch in terms of volume either. Clean ones (like mine are tough to come by...
depends on the cab. you use with it, i run a 2x10, and it beats anything else that i've ever heard, and beleive me, when i went out to buy this bad boy, i tried basically every single amp and cab in the area, and tonewise, genz beats all!
I doubt you tried a AMP BH-420 as they have not been made since the late 80's and are very scarce. Closest thing being made today is the Thunderfunk which is a direct decendent of the AMP BH-420. If you tried a Thunderfunk, you would know pretty much what a AMP BH-420 sounds like but you don't see too many Funk's out there as the are not mass produced like the Genz is (the Funk's are hand made, one by one as were the AMP BH-420's). Until you try one, you really can't say that the Genz is better. I've tried a couple of Genz's. I like em but LOVE the AMP BH-420...
I love having rare amps myself, but for an amp that you can actually go out there and BUY, get the Genz! Haven't played the AMP, since I've never seen one, so it may be all that, but good luck finding one, and if you do, then try it out and see for yourself! All the Genz bass stuff is top notch. Got an old series 1 combo and a GBE 600, the 600 is much more sophisticated and powerful, but both are great. The 600 is LOUD. Louder than you'd think for 600 watts, much louder than the 900 watt SWR I used to have. Same front end I believe as the 400. Very flexible EQ, but I found it needed no tweaking to sound great, I just set everything flat, with maybe a slight mid boost depending on the bass. For my 5 string I wanted to have a scooped tone with plenty of boom and clank, I can get that using the switches and leave the EQ alone.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think i read somewhere that the GBE600 has a tube in the preamp (?) and the GBE 400 does not. Anyway.. i think my heart is set on the 400... thanks for your help!
You're probably right, I thought they were the same but I haven't checked. I've played the 400 briefly in a store, and really liked it.
