Well, you automatically stop smiling when you get the bill for those new biometric passports - 130 €!

Paranoia = ripping people off their money and their rights... :(

Oh, and Schily is an i***t.

My brother has a German girlfriend who gave me a book entitled 'Do as the Germans Do' about German Culture. It said that excessive smiling, the kind Americans are prone to, is considered a sign of feeble-mindedness.

    This made me laugh

It's not just Germans, Sport. Welcome to the new world of facial recognition software. :D

    Canada:
"Facial expression must be neutral (not frowning nor smiling) with the mouth closed. "

    http://www.pptc.gc.ca/passports/get_photo_specs_e.asp

    UK:
A Home Office spokesman said: "When the mouth is open it can make it difficult for facial recognition technology to work effectively."

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3541444.stm

Even the good ol' US of A:
"It is generally recommended that one should not sport a smile in their passport photos."

How is this stealing the rights of anyone? IMO, this is an interesting push towards solving the problem of identity theft. The bill is a bit much, though...

I don't know, I paid $95 for my passport back in 1998. Of course you might need to use yours more than I do.

I paid 15 € for my old one, and yes, I guess the majority of Germans has a passport.

Around where I live, the liquor stores won't take passports as positive ID because they don't know what a real one looks like.

Well, here the passport is also really just for travelling, you're required to have a regular identity card anyway.

There's an old proverb in Finland:

"If someone smiles at you on the street for no apparent reason, pay no attention - he's probably either drunk, a lunatic or american."

I have a bet going with my father about who will be Germany's next Kanselier. I bet Schröder, he bets on Merkel.
