I am going to a 2nd hand shop where people trade in stuff for money. I am looking for maybe a squier p bass or better yet a fender precison or jazz bass. Any other good brands I should look for as I am also going to a guitar shop?

Ritter maybe? They are imported so they gotta be a little less expensive than the American brands.

I am partial to Sadowsky. ;) All the best as you start out on one of the greatest instruments. :)

OK, back to real life. For a first bass, a good Squier is OK, a Mexican Fender could be a little better. I like the versatility of a Jazz bass over P-bass. If you found even a decent Ibanez, it'd probably be OK (sshhhhh! You didn't hear it here.) You'll see Carvins once in a while, and they're pretty good. Make sure you play it before you buy it to make sure that it works and is not the suXor.
