The Bass in question is a 1967 Gibson EB2 semi-accoustic. Just wondering if anyone has owned/tried one. I mean how does it cut it as a serious bass. Is it anything more than a show peice? Also it's US$600 is that any good.
My first bass was a new EB-2D bought for me by my dad in 1967. I loved that bass and thought it was the epitomy of tone, though I guess I must have realized it was pretty muddy since I used to split the output and put some of it through a fuzz tone so I could hear the notes! That one got lost in the sands of time, and when I started playing again a few years ago, I bought myself a nice used one expecting the same wonderful sound. And guess what: It's fun to play but tonally pretty muddy and the notes are indistinct. If you like that sound (I notice that a number of R&B & Blues artists are using a similar tone for ballads lately) it's a fine instrument. $600 is a great price if it's really clean. A lot of them have had the headstock broken off and repaired, since the top of the neck is very delicate, so check carefully. Good Luck, JOnathan
Thanks for the reply. That's pretty much what I wanted to know. I have much respect for musician veterans such as yourself. And you used fuzz that's cool. I've only been playing since about '97. It's amazing how instruments can keep our interest because we can never really master them.
