Just picked one if these up. Needs some work. My first semi-hollow short scale bass.

    Can anyone help with these:

    1) String suggestions - Looking for short scale flatwound strings. Rich and creamy lows? Have my eyes on Thomastik JF324.

    2) Pick up cover? This one is missing the chrome brass cover. Where can I find a replacement?

    3) Upgrades... The bass is gonna be setup and restored by a luthier. The neck pick up is in bad shape but can be repaired. Any upgrade suggestions for a pick up or any other components that would improve playability?

Any general comments and reviews of people who own or have owned this in the past are welcome. Thanks for your time!

  2. Pyramid Gold strings, as used on the Hofner bass, works like a charm. You really need the stringtension on a shortscale, which the Thomastiks don't deliver.
Cover: keep your eyes open on ebay, they pop up every once in a while.

Upgrades: straplocks (the stock Gibson knobs are only visible with a microscope). Apart from that I can't really think of anything.

Thanks. I have strap locks on the list. Is there any other way to get a bridge cover... Its okay if it ain't original too. I also need to find a hard case that fits well but I figure there are enough threads on that topic.

I don't know of anywhere other than eBay to get certain parts for an EB-2. I have one, and if yours is red, it is the same as yours. The mudbucker neck pickup on mine had been replaced with a Dimarzio Model One pickup when I got mine, and it's got an outstanding sound. It isn't as powerful as a mudbucker, but it is an otherwise great way to go. I don't know what kind of strings are on mine, since they have been there for more or less ever. If yours has the string mute assembly on it, you will find that removing it from under the bridge will allow a better setup. I don't know what they were thinking, unless the string mute I have is somehow not the right one. I can't believe Gibson would make more than one design. That's all I can say, except enjoy it!

Hard case wise, scavenge Ebay for old gibson eb-2/d case/Epiphone Jack casady cases/Epiphone Rivioli cases. They should work pretty much for the body style and have enough headspace as well.
