Gibson EB-0 Question

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by blast_tyrant, Apr 20, 2006.

  1. I just picked up a DVD of the Old Grey Whistle Test music show Volume 1. It has some really cool performances from Alice Cooper doing Under My Wheels in 71, The Specials doing Rudi, A Message To You, to the Ramones. All of the clips are actual performances rather than lip synching.

My question is this: There's a clip of Iggy Pop doing I'm Bored. I don't know who's playing bass, but it looks like an early Gibson EB-0. Unlike the later models that are essentially an SG bass, this thing has a double cutaway Les Paul Junior shaped body. I've been trying to find more info on this bass without much luck. There's a little info on gibsonbass.com, but not much. Was it ever re-issued? Did it come in a two pickup configuration? Help!

This is kinda off topic, bass-wise, but Iggy has a black guy in a cowboy hat playing a white Ovation Deacon in the video. Any idea who this guy was?

it is but I don't recall what year(s) it was made. I don't think it was made with 2 pups. you could search the dudepit's Gibson forum for more complete info.

The bass player is ex- Sex Pistol Glen Matlock. Glen Cornick of early Jethro Tull had also a Les Paul DC bodied EB-0. I've never seen a two pickup model either.

    From http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson9.html
    1959 EB-0 specs:
Model introduction. Dot fingerboard inlays, cherry red finish, slab mahogany double cutaway body with rounded points (like 1959 Les Paul Junior), banjo style tuners, black plastic-covered pickup with poles closest to bridge side.
    1960 EB-0 specs:
Pickup poles across middle of pickup.
    1961 EB-0 specs:
SG style, sharp pointed double cutaway body with beveled edges, right angle tuners.

So it's a 1959 or 1960 model. All the two pup EB3's had SG styled bodies, AFAIK.

I nearly posted this question again; looked high and low for the answer myself. I should have known the good info would be here on TalkBass. Here's the clip, anyway:

No wonder I could not figure it out. The answer is Glenn Matlock rocking a 1959/60 pre-SG body EB-0. Who knew? (TB, that's who).
