So I'm looking into a few different basses, just looking right now, and I came across this particular one at Musicians Friend, and I have a few questions... For the money ($1500usd), I'd also be looking at a Warwick Corvette Active, and possibly a Spector Euro. How well would you guys the Growler hold up against to two??? I've heard that the Nordie Quad MM 'Bucker is hard to beat when it comes to this particular application. How would you guys say it holds up versus the stock Bartolini one? Also, what about the preamp on this beast? I've heard some stories about the Toby Pros (sure it doesn't apply here) having great sounding p'ups and just a weak preamp. Same deal, different axe? Or whole new story? I appreciate any info you guys could give me, as I'm sure you'll all be able to shed some light on this bass, you all know far more than I do. ~Ryan
From what I have seen, the fit and finish on Gibson Tobias Growlers is poor forn an instrument in it's price bracket. it didn't sound that good either. Get a Stingray or a Warwick.
I ordered a growler and sent it back due to poor quality, the access panel for the 2 batteries were held in by wood screws. After you change the batteries, you have to put wood putty in the holes. Very poor planning. It also came w/ a spot on it and the neck was out of whack. I play Warwick, but any of the others are fine.
There is some Tobias Growler users here: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/tobiasmtdbasses/ Maybe they can help you on this topic. But anyway, don't worry, you can't make a bad choice in going ahead with the Growler, the preamp is better than on the Tobys.
