    Hello

My family and I are thinking about moving to the Reno, NV area to be closer to our extended families.

Does anyone have any experience with the music scene in that area ? Any pro's and con's ?

I can play anything but country and rap (I can I just hate it)

When anyone requests country and/or rap in my current band, this is the line I always give them. "we used to play in a band that did country and rap, and we called it CRAP"

Any advice on playing in the Reno, NV area, including casino stuff, will be appreciated

    Thanks

    Richard

It's all country music in Reno. C'mon! It's Nevada, for crying out loud.

Well, being from Vegas since 88 I've played Reno many times over the years.

Contrary to Munji's (I think "tongue in cheek") comment, being all Country is hardly the truth (not since the Garth Brooks explosion anyway). Although you can get away with "0" country at most places, and you won't hear any groups doing any "Gangsta" rap, I wouldn't use that quote of yours I highlighted above (especially over the mic  ).
If the wrong Casino Exec. hears you say it, or you say it to the wrong "Highroller" you could find yourself fired very quickly.

A friend of mine's group, that had 36 weeks a year booked at a major Strip casino here in Vegas, lost all their work with that casino for the next two years (72 weeks of pre-booked work) because of a similar comment.
These guys were one of the top three groups in town and they still got fired.

Reno/Sparks doesn't have near as much work as Vegas (because of size) so if you plan on working full time be prepared for some travel to other casinos in northern Nevada like Carson City, Wendover, Jackpot, etc.

    Good Luck

I live and play gigs in Reno. There's not a lot of money to be made playing clubs, and no dignity (IMHO) playing casino gigs. There are some great musicians aroud here, though. It's just a small scene, unfortunately.

And I've seen very little Country music around here. Some good Rock/Metal acts.

    Good Luck
