OK, the fabulous Rock Ridge band will be at the extra fabulous Del Dios Country Store in mondo fabulous downtown Del Dios this Friday and Saturday night, March 7 and 8. Look for the "Live Bait" sign at the corner of Date and Lake. (It's near not-too-fabulous Escondido.)

This is country, blues and classic rock. Steaks, burgers, seafood and booze are available. No cover charge.

There was this great color piece on NPR's All Things Considered about the guy who supposedly popularized the whole FREEEEBIRD! request thing. He supposedly swore off doing it after yelling it at a quiet auditorium where some classical or serious jazz ensemble was performing - AND THEY ACTUALLY PLAYED IT!

Probably not a true story, but it was a fun and well-done piece.

Best Freebird cover I've ever witnessed had to be at a Phish show back in about '93 or so. This was back before the arena days, at a nightclub in Houston. With acoustic instruments and NO MICROPHONES even, they did a killer version, complete with scat-sung guitar solos!

    :D

    Why the "odd" number?
    ...somebody missing a hand?

I used to be in this 'original'/somewhat 'out' band...when "Free Bird" or "SKYNERD" got yelled out(as it usually does)-
We played the heckler a couple minutes of "Sweet Home Alabama"...with a Disco-fied chorus(imagine octave bass with that stereotypical hi-hat over the D-C-G-G).

  7. Best "Freebird" cover I've ever heard was in high school (I think around '76), by a local band of cops called Grand Fuzz.

Someone bonehead called out "FREEBIRD" and they launched into it right away. Very cool.
