Guys, we play Grunge, and we want it to sound really mean.

I own a Tech 21 SansAmp Character VT Bass V2, but I'm not happy with it. I've tried a few, including the traditional Big Muff, ProCo Rat, the highly acclaimed, high-priced ones from Darkglass.... well, I don't like them or I'm too stupid to use them.

What I would NOT like to achieve is a sound that emphasizes the mids and highs and competes with the guitars.

I want a deep, creepy, shattering, terrifying depressing BASS sound that causes goosebumps and turns the listener's guts around.

    Any suggestions?

This’s how I would describe the Swollen Pickle.

ive got a Keeley mod v2 rat and its sex. It can be turned down for some fuzzy/crunchy blues and jazz or turned up and just melt your face.

Run about 100$ for the older ones, some up to 200$ but its worth it IMHO.

    Two things come to mind:

Have you tried mixing OD with your clean sound?

And maybe stacking ODs along with the above might be something to look into.

Do you have some bands sound you like and say, something in that direction? Because when I think dark ODs, the Muff would be one of the first things to try, but you didn't like that. (I love a Fuzz Face into a Muff, but it's a sound that's completely different from what you're looking for. It's mids city.)

My closest pedal to that would be the Damnation Audio MBD-1 for that low meaty retention.

In my mind, I feel like you’re describing Ben Shepherd’s tone. His sound is so dark and doomy imo.

I would get some Dunwich dirt; Old Dirty Bass, Wizard fuzz (125b with the blend), or Bass Overdriver in that order or all three if you can swing it.

If you can’t get deep, creepy, and terrifying with those, not sure it will be possible.

A cheaper but great option is an Idiotbox Blower Box. Massive lows and low gain to high gain all available.

The Old Dirty comes pretty close... unfortunately this stuff is not available on this side of the pond, and shipping, taxes, customs etc. would make an import ridiculously expensive... same with the Idiotbox.

For the sound you’re describing, an Idiotbox Dungeon Master should be perfect. A Lone Wolf Dominator would be great also, but like the Dunwich stuff it would probably be pretty pricey where you are. So, Dungeon Master.

The Idiotbox Landphil and EHX Sovtek Deluxe both came to mind also and are great, but IMO the Dungeon Master is more evil sounding.

Euh ... I don't know your bass or your amp ( or lack ) but with a Tech 21 it is possible. I mean cut the presence and boost bass and maybe a touch of drive.

You would also be surprise how much high frequencies get eat up. Of course depending on the EQ of everyone.

  15. I used to have a Fulltone OCD pedal that I liked, didn't lose the low bass tones. Hopefully you are using 15" speakers or an 8x10" cab.

Oh yeah, that would be my recommendation as well for what you're wanting @Mister Mo. That will excel in bringing huge low end, a lot of saturated fuzz and scoop. The DOD Carcosa isn't really scooped but the low end is good and it is an aggressive fuzz to OD. Also the Blower Box from Idiot Box comes to mind. Can be scooped if you run the bass higher on it and run the treble around noon. Huge low end on it too. One of the most aggressive dist's I've had. Love that pedal.

I know you said you don't like Darkglass. That doesn't make you stupid at all. But the newer X7 they released will also get you where you want to be IMO. Tons of headroom when ran at higher voltages, tons of bass and any other EQ you want or don't want. Plus the drive on it can be very aggressive. You can dial in a lot of sounds with that pedal.

Dod Boneshaker perhaps? I believe it´s discontinued now but you probably could find one pretty easily.
