Wow. I just spent all day learning to play That Smell correctly (Leon was amazing). I am being a tittle hard on myself. Been at it for 5 hours and almost have it. I am 51 with no formal training and have an intense desire to learn to walk and play killer Blues, but spend all my time learning cover songs for my band as I like to play out. I am very hard on myself and sometimes feel I should be better than I am even though I never worked on bass before I was 40. I don’t like to cheat and not get things right. That is not easy sometimes! I am enrolled in Scott’s but devote not enough time to it. I own a business, have kids and a wife so I’ll never be Cliff and don’t expect that. Aaaaagh!

If you keep ODing by playing that long, you are more likely to burn out. Pick how long you want to play, and then stop. Leon isn't going anywhere.

Yeah I took several breaks usually 20-30 minutes trying then 15 or more rest. I know better. Did come a time to put it down though.

No, I mean stop for the day. I think it's better to play x minutes per day, each day, not until your eyes are crossed.

I don’t think how long we practice will guarantee our learning

Length of time is important no doubt,

but how we practice matters more, in my experience...

Concentration takes a lot of work and when learning new things I think short sessions each day regularly are better than long sessions trying to nail one piece

Also if a piece is so hard to learn, then I always think that maybe it is an indication for me that the underlying basics need more work

I also learned to break things down into small sections and work each small section out

I then find sometimes that I might be able to readily get certain sections down ...but that one sticky bit seems like I will never learn it

But when come back weeks, months or a year after working on other stuff and it can sometimes be , like wow I can actually play that now...

I also now that when I do long sessions at a less intense level that it has a meditational type effect

I don’t subscribe to the getting stressed out trying to learn stuff approach

Whilst learning things can be hard work, it should generate a sense of well being ...

The going fishing sounds like it was a good idea

Enjoy your bass .... I believe things come in time if we are persistent, consistent and patient ... but we need good learning habits and I have found other players and a decent teacher here and there can be invaluable in guidance on all of that plus more ...

Yes I have put a post out locally for a teacher. I get lost in what to learn next.

So I came back to it tonight and after going over a few things and committing to memory and now have it 95% down. Feels killer!
