I have a Gallien-Krueger MB212 that sounds a little weird lately. About a month ago I've noticed that of and on, I'll sound a little distorted, lacking low end and sustain. Sometimes it would come back to normal and I assumed it was something to do with the wiring of whichever building I was in. Luckily it was never like that for any gigs. Lately, however, it's only been distorted, and sounded kind of normal whenever there was slapping or popping going on, or just harder playing in general. So I've concluded, after testing two basses, three cables, multiple outlets and removal of all pedals from the chain, that it's the speaker(s). Should I take it in to repair? It's still under warranty. Does anyone have any clue what they'll do or charge? Or should I replace them myself, and if so what kind of speakers should I get? It's 500w. Thanks for your input.
If it is still under warranty I would contact who you bought it from tell them what's going on with it and then they should tell you the next steps to get it fixed if there is an issue with it.
I bought it from musician's friend last October. I called them and said to contact GK, who told me to take it to a service center.
G-K makes their own NEO speakers in the G-K plant so there is no direct replacement other than from G-K. I would first contact [email protected] or [email protected] (I think Daniel is still there) for some diagnostic help. If under warranty still they can get you hooked up. You can also PM user "rag" here on TB, he is the president/owner/head engineer (Robert A Gallien). Here is the speaker but they are not cheap to just try if you don't have to pay http://secure.netsolhost.com/272252...e=GS&Product_Code=082-0340-A&Category_Code=S8.
I'd be interested to know the outcome of this when you get the cab back. I was considering one of these to pair with my MB Fusion...but I had the same problem you are describing with an older GK SBX115 cabinet. I would think the MB 212 is a whole different animal than the SBX115, so it seems kind of strange both cabs would experience the same issue.
Tne NEO's are made in California now http://www.gallien-krueger.com/factory-fotos/ go to the bottom of the page. The ceramic speakers (SBX) are OEM contracted with Eminence IIRC from Mr Gallien. And here http://www.gallien-krueger.com/gk-plans-to-make-speakers-in-the-u-s/
I'll let you guys know when it comes back in. Going on almost 5 weeks now. Luckily I have a backup amp (not that I'll be gigging anytime soon).
I finally got my amp back today. One of the speakers was blown and the other was on its way. It got two new speakers installed and it works great! The lackluster tone was replaced with great tone-- I guess I just never realized it was so bad until it became more noticeable.
