I have the opportunity to by a used, but like new GK MB500 with a Neo 410 cab (8 ohm) for $700. I have played an 800rb for the last five years and love the sound.

Two questions. First, is $700 a good deal for this rig? Second, how does the MB500 compare to the 800rb.

    Thanks.

The price is fair. I think I usually see each piece go between $300-$400...closer to $350 I believe.

The MB500 will have more low end than the 800RB, but otherwise they sound fairly similar. I "semi retired" my 800RB when I got my MB500. When pushed the 800RB does the GK growl much better, but the MB can get close enough in a live situation with the boost channel IMO.

If the cab was 4 ohms it would be more interesting. As it stands, I'd would rather save money and get a more powerful head (MB800) then spend money on a pair of cabs. Maybe start out with a GK212 Neo and get another one later, if you need it.

My experience with the two heads is the 800RB is a workhouse with lots of usable bottom, while the MB500 tends to falter a bit a higher volumes with a single 8 ohm cab.

I agree. I own the MB500 and a 4 ohm GK 410MBE and this utilizes the full potential of this little beast. I found the MB500 to be voiced a little bass heavier than the 800RB but with the suck knob (contour) all the way off, bass and low mids dialed back a hair, and the boost channel engaged and pushed hard it does a respectable job.
