Hey everybody got my holiday coming up in septmember. I've decided to take my girlfriend over to see my dad in houston well he actually lives in Richmond. I was just wondering if anybody had any recomendations for good music venues and clubs, bass shops and malls. Thanks in advance
Houston has some places but if you really want a musical experience head over to Austin and spend a night on and around 6th street. Unbelievable music scene over there. brad cook
For a bass shop, check out Rockin' Robin on Shepherd. For a mall, go to the The Galleria. For live music - guess it depends on what your tastes are...
I've been meaning to go by Southpaw for a long time now. Not that I'm a lefty, but I bought one of my first basses there (a righty Ric 4001) back in the early 80's. Wasn't much to the place back then - just a neighborhood shop not too far from my grandparents' house. I'm assuming they've grown a bit since then...
Quite fancy some jazz or motown stuff anything a little but different would be good. Any one know any good zoo's or places for a good day out need to treat my girlfriend. Thanks in advance.
You'll find the Houston zoo is located near what they call "the museum district." The name says it all, and you can't go wrong. Museum of natural history features touring and permanent displays, planetarium, IMAX, and a pyramid-shaped butterfly habitat that is guaranteed to win you big points with the girlfriend. Add to that a bevy of art museums, holocaust museum and other theme museums I can't remember. Not far (in Houston terms) is the Rice Village area, with good shopping and restaurants, including some good ethnic eats. There... I'll let someone else cover the music part. I'm not as 'up' on the music scene as I should be.
If you are into jazz and want to take your woman to a really nice restuarant... SAMBUCA JAZZ CAFE is your place. It is located in the heart of downtown. http://www.sambucajazzcafe.com/ If you are in houston on a wednesday, you can take a private lesson from a friend of mine MARK WHITE of the SPIN DOCTORS @ ROCKIN ROBIN, the music store mentioned above.
Houston has a pretty bad music scene actually If you're into the heavier style music and don't mind trekking into a bad area, check out The Engine Room or Fitzgeralds. Sometimes Fitz has some non-rock bands...but I don't go there often enough to know. If you're around the spring area, Java Jazz Coffee House is a nice little venue. But I do know most music venuws in Houston (engine room, fitzgerlads, numbers) are in pretty scary places in Houston.
