    TLDR at bottom:

So last year, I posted about getting a new bass. None if it worked out and instead I just repaired my current bass and got some work done on the neck(better action)
Thr bass I currently have is a Ibaneze EDC 705, ergodyn, made of luthite, smells like gas..its smelled that way dince I got it as a kid back in 99.

I tried to get a trbx 505 last year, got screwed around by GC, bought one from sam ash, all kinds of jacked up neck and fretts, it went back and they setbmy current bass up for free for the trouble...good guys.

Now, I am attempting to aquire either a trbx 605, OR a sterling by music man ray 35 stealth black HH.(lists 999.00)

I know I like the tone of the trbx, Iv seen a few posts here stating that the indonesian MM its kinda "meh" and that the trbx has more warmth than this bass.

Guitar center says thry can order thr trbx, showed me that they can get via thrir computer screen...trust isnt there after last time.
The "MM" can be ordered from sam ash, says they have one in a wharehouse.

Question is, is the 999$ price on thatbparticular model worth it? Or id the cheaper trbx a far better value fot what you actually get.

GC had a 4 string version of yhe "MM" thoigh I wasnt allowed to touch it because covid...howeveebin the midfle of the demo the bass started farting, three amps, new battery...not a good sign.

Also, my limit is 800$ plus trade in on my bass, or the trbx and I get to keep my childhood bass.

I like both sounds...ar least from ehst I coukd gather from youtube videos..however alot of prople that I was ablr to view did the standard review on dounds...one riff, all settings, rinse repeat...while thats great Id like to hear it in my style, (metal ,prog metal).

To those who own one of these, how is the B string on thr trbx...I know string gauge comes into factor here..but Im just worried about a floppy B(we typically drop the B to an A) I do use a 140B when I can find it. My current bass is pretty clear tuned to A on it.

    TLDR
Im After a trbx 605 or a Sterling by MM RAY 35 HH. Budget 800 plus EDC 705 trade in value or trbx and I can keep my current.
Why should I not get one over the other.

TRBX and keep your current bass, in my opinion. I LOVE Music Man basses, but for that money you could get a used US Music Man in very good shape that would obliterate the import model in every conceivable way (though the imports are surprisingly nice).

I'm not an instrument hoarder, but I'd always do my best to hang onto anything decent I have that plays and sounds good, if for no other reason than to have as a backup, but also just for a different flavor when I want it.

If you're interested in Music Man basses specifically, I'd recommend saving up a couple hundred more bucks and buying a used US model. You can definitely get what you paid back out of it if it's not for you (if you have a local Music Man dealer, go play some new ones- they've changed very little since the late 90s in terms of tone and playabilty/feel). For that matter, you should be able to find the import model used for two or three hundred less, again negating the need to trade in your existing bass, but they won't hold their value like their American brethren.

I've never played an Ergodyne, but I assume they play pretty similarly to the majority of Ibanez basses. They feel pretty unique, but the Yamahas I've played have been pretty similar to a typical Ibanez, more so than MM basses.

Lastly, and I still don't fully understand why, but Yamahas tend to be some of the absolute best 'bang for the buck' instruments out there. If you like the way the Yammie feels and sounds, it'd be pretty tough to go wrong with it.

At this point in the game (having a bass already, and looking for an “upgrade,”) I would only buy a main bass after trying it first. Barring that, at least with a return policy. Do the stores charge a restock fee if you don’t like a bass they special order for you?

I will always choose ergonomics over sound. Sound can be tweaked in many ways, but a Bass’s playability is hard to alter. Do you like the way your current bass plays? Despite its flaws, did you like the overall construction of the 505?

Me thinks you got a real fluke there with the 505, Yamaha has some of the best QC in the biz. Still, I wouldn’t rule out the Ray. I played a Ray34 that was incredible; very nicely finished neck and a great rich and punchy tone.

    good luck!

Well, im no longer after the 505, im after the 605.

Yeah I mean I do like the bass I have, even with the adjustments, Iv played cheaper basses that have had better actions.
As far as the sound, its unique, lots of people say they sound dead...even with new strings...iv never felt that way..but to each there own, no hate. IMO, It has tons of tones, and punchy as hell, do to the mid freq boost/cut knob.

Its just its old, 1 complete solder job, 1 complete rewire with replacement of bent double stacked pots, multiple input jack fixes..the last time i had to do this cost me around 300$. I dont think putting that kind of money into this particular bass is worth it anymore.

Im thinking that Im just going to put an order on the 605 from GC and give it another try. They have a good return policy.

I think that if im going to ever buy a MM, the best bet is to go full American made...however after listening to more stuff I dont think i would be happy with a normal 5 string MM. I think I would either be happy with a bongo or a dingwall...thats long term though...much more investment.

Il do this saturday, perhaps some more incite will come from other members before then...NOT that I dont value yalls input, thank you very much both of you.

Just reading your posts, it sounds like the 605 checks more of your boxes. Seems like a better fit. Either way, good luck and let us know! :D

I think you made the right choice between the two. I love Rays but if you want something that sounds warmer, I would go with the TRBX, the Ray isn't exactly what I would call warm sounding.
I would have suggested going with a used one to save on the money, in fact there's a four string in natural finish for $445 that i'm GASsing for.

Totally would have bought used, if I could find one. The closest Iv come was a 505 fir 300$ on craigslist...I tried but already sold.

Also Iv only ever played the 505, once, and it was a floor model at sam ash that I returned.
After that(a year ago) even finding one to demo was damn near impossible. GC loves ibanez and fender, sam ash always sold out, websites(reputable) back ordered.

So, really didnt have much choice but to order and hope(again).
I was also told that GC didnt take money from your account till they shipped and wouod send me an email before all thst took place...well this morning they took the money out of my account...no shipped email...not 12 hours and already fishy poopie going on. Going to make a trip to GC once they open...since getting them on the phone takes an act from god.

You know, now that you say the eay diesnt sound warm...In almost every youtube video I watched on the ray it did sound pretty clicky in the mixes I heard, but maybe thsts just an EQ thing?

I love the Ray but mellow is not a word I would describe it. The 3 band EQ ones tend to have that mid/treble definition even when the bass on full ("clicky" as you describe it - a pretty apt description ), the 2 band classic EQ versions are better imo but even then, the Yamaha basses still tend to sound smoother to me. You can tame the inherent beast in the Rays somewhat with mutes, right strings, but it's got that underlying bite to it. I play a lot of funk so the Ray is killer for it, but for the other stuff, I tend to prefer a P-Bass or something like a Yamaha TRBX. Personal preference I know. I used to own a TRBX305, it's a lesser version and I really preferred that over the TRB505 for some reason. The 604/605 wasn't around then.

Check out the classifieds here, or even Reverb.
I know it's not a finish you particularly like, but there's one in excellent condition for $499 with free shipping.
Not my bass nor am I affiliated with the seller but it looks to be from a music store in NY.

I'd +1 that Rays are purpose built to punch you in the throat. They're really versatile but they are not subtle. I love mine but I know it always sounds like a Ray.
Also +1 for trying as many as you can before you buy.

Just went by GC. It looks to be that my "backordered" bass has been scanned in at the KC distribution center, no tracking number yet...Im not sure what the ladys title at GC was but she does all the computer stuff at GC.

She Said it showed backorded with a july recieving date but mine show to be scanned in...not sure how that works but i might actually get ut soonish.

Whicj i guess makes sense, since the money was already taken out of my account
