Good Covers

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by Ulyanov, Aug 3, 2001.

  1. I just thought that with all of the talk of bad covers in the worst covers thread, maybe I'd start a thread about good covers. Some favourites of mine are:
Gram Parsons - Wild Horses, originally by the Rolling Stones
Cream - Crossroads, originally by Robert Johnson
I think that a lot of Led Zeppelin's first album was cover songs, if so, then those too
Oysterhead - The Israelites, but I'm not sure who originally did it
Phish - Gin and Juice, originally by Snoop Doggy Dogg

That's all I can think of right now, except for the endless list of Phish covers.

  2. i like that new doors cover cd, those are pretty good, ... and elenor rigby by gODHEAD, even my dad likes it!

  3. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Dylan)
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe (Billy Roberts?)
Tool - No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)
    Cream - Crossroads

  4. fiona apple's "across the universe" comes to mind, as does the beatles' "twist and shout."

  5. What comes to mind is...

    Everyone on this CD...

New Found Glory "From The Screen to Your Stereo."

Great cover of that Titanic song.

  6. soulfly - smoke on the water

  7. The Blue Meanies - Yellin' In My Ear (originally by Operation Ivy)

  8. oops wrong thread, wasn't there a bad covers one? anyway, sorry about that

It really depends on how you classify a 'good' cover - I have a massive cover collection (it's one of my hobbies), and the ones I enjoy the most are the ones that take a whole new direction with the original song - I'm really impressed with Hayseed Dixie's AC/DC cover album, and (I know groans are coming here) I really REALLY enjoyed Pat Boone's heavy metal cover album. Some other good singular covers are The Cardigans' version of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Ozzy and Dweezil's cover of Staying Alive, and probably my all-time favorite cover is Iron Maiden's cover of Cross-Eyed Mary.

If anybody wants to compare lists, let me know, as my covers collection is all ripped to mp3 format so I can listen to them at work. I have over 400 titles, almost all studio (live covers just don't do it for me).

Speaking of covers, does anyone watch Cover Wars on VH1? Now THAT'S my kind of game show!

  18. Its been mentioned, but another vote for Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower', best cover ever. Ive heard Clapton and Neil Young cover that song too, and they were pretty cool.
I have an MP3 of U2 doing a cover of 'Paint It Black' and its awesome.
Also the Doors version of 'Gloria' was a lot better then the original. I liked Creed's version of 'Riders On The Storm' too.

This is not only the best cover in a long time but it is also one of my favorite songs in general.

Another good one is Primus doing Amos Moses.
