It's an okay price. I see them go for around that sometimes.

But snap it up before someone else does!

OK. I don't get it. Someone please explain. Yes, this is a
good price for jazz bass, but how do you have any idea
if is even the slightest bit a good instrument? It just seems
like such a gamble to pay hundreds of dollars for a bass that
may be great, or the biggest dog ever. I just got a am dlx
jazz from Musicians Friend. We could tell in 15 minutes of
adjusting and playing that the bass barked at the moon.
Fortunatey we could send it back, but on ebay....thats it.
I see many good deals here on TB also, but again, I'm
afraid of sending $1,200. and getting an "unmagical" bass.
How do you guys do it??

  4. Play it in a store/friends house/so forth first before you jump on the gravy train.

When buying a used bass, especially a Fender, if you don't like it, you can throw it back on eBay and sell it for possibly a loss or a slight profit. The name recognition is there. Also, that bass that you didn't like from MF might be the absolute jem to the next guy that buys it.

yea obviously you can play it in the stoor and stuff but all instruments may varry even if they are exactly the same instruments one MM stingray may sound and feel completely different than another MM stingray which is exactly the same.

For me it comes down to what Nino said. If it's a good enough deal with a reputable brand, I'll buy it with hopes that I can flip it for what I paid or even a profit.

With Musiciansfriend.com I buy knowing I can return it most of the time. Or sometimes if you get a good enough deal from MF, you can sell it for a profit on eBay.

Not sure it matters much, but this bass is described as a 2003 model, but the SN indicates 2000.

I know you can play a bass in your local store, thats not
my point. That works if you take the attitude that any Fender
bass is exactly the same as any other Fender bass. Perhaps
my needs are more critical. The idea that I may not like a
bass, but the next guy will love it, only works if the bass is
not a dog. (bad neck, dead notes, bad workmanship etc)
A dog is a dog. ALso, a bass would have to be a rediculous
deal to make it worth my time to "try" and sell it for what I
paid for it, let alone making money on it. And what about
KARMA????????? I could never feel good about making more
off a "bad" bass than I paid for it. What kind of person would
that make me. One more reason to be wary of the used
    market.

+1.......One man's trash is another man's treasure.......many people buy online and are happy with their purchses, assuming that the seller has not misrepresented the product......others are, shall we say, "extremely discriminating" and will not be happy with any perceived shortcoming and would better serve themselves by not buying online.

  11. I'm not keen on buying something on ebay that I know for a fact I can get at a local shop or GC or Bass Central or whatever. I only check ebay for the older used stuff that is hard to find locally.

I purchased a '97 Fender Jazz Amer. Deluxe 5 string for $750 off of eBay. I was completely expecting a dud, and to send it back onto eBay for a profit.

Turns out it is an amazing bass... So....

I'm happy for you, but it still seems like a major gamble to
buy site unseen, especially if we're talking over $1,000.
Even Sadowsky offers a return or exchange when ordered
    site unseen.

Yes it is a gamble, but we're not talking over $1000... Where did you get that figure from?

We're talking $799 and it can be sold again off of eBay for over $900 most likely.

I bouhgt about 50 basses or so on eBay and I've never bought a dog. Again, what I might think of as a dog with a bad neck, bad this, that, etc, is someone elses great bass.

If you buy from an eBaer that has good feedback and they sell lots of instruments, most likey, you're not gonna get screwed over. I buy and sell alot of gear on eBay and my reputation is worth more than the profit of selling a bass with a bad neck.

If you plan to buy online, do some research. :)

That finish is 100% goregeous, I've seen it in real life. It's also quite unusual.

I just meant buying basses in general over $1,000. How
would you feel if you got an $800. bass that ended up
having some real problems? Would you be ok with just
selling it to the next guy AND making a profit?

Just looking at this particular austion and this seller, I 'd feel very confident buying fom him.

    Feedback Score: 146
    Positive Feedback: 100%

I looked at his last 5 auctions in his feeedbacksection and they're all guitars/basses with excellent feedback.

There's gambeling blindly and there's doing research. :)

You are right. Much less of a risk.

Good point, but that's what makes it America (for the most part of eBay).
