So, we're taking the Fingers girls to their first game at Fenway next week. (My 10 year old can rattle off stats on most of our starters. I'm a proud papa. ) But we're gonna be in town for a few days. We won't have any free adult time so rowdy bars are out (this trip). But good eats and a good music store would be great! Mrs.Fingers and I don't care about touristy places. So just good food will get us done. We'll be in town for a few days so we should have time for dad to swing by and buy a bass or two, right? (Yes, we're already taking the girls on the duck tour and to the aquarium.) Go Sox!
Visited Boston 2 summers back, so hopefully these are still there. About 1/2 way between the MIT Museum (well worth a visit) and Harvard Yard, on Massachusetts Ave, we found a funky cafe called Life Alive. Very colourful room, cool staff, and a decent selection of soups and sandwiches. A little further on is Mike's Monster Guitar, which had some cool old guitars and basses. I almost bought a Danelectro there! There's also, if memory serves, a couple of decent bookstores and a record store. Some dodgy looking folks wandering around, but keep an eye on the girls and you should be fine. Enjoy!
Someone is making a strong run for Father-of-the-Year! For lunch near the Aquarium, consider Galleria Umberto - Galleria Umberto Its all good, but remember it is cash-only. I used to go there every week or two when I worked downtown, you line up, tell the guy what you want, he puts it on plates and trays and adds up the bill in his head. With a family, make sure you get at least one of everything but beware of the calzones - one might fill you up and you might not have room for the arancini or panzarotti. For local flavor - Mr. Music in Allston. One of the Guitar Centers is across the street from Fenway Park on Boylston and the other is a short walk to Mass Ave across from Berklee. First game at Fenway is always a great experience. I was 9 or 10 when I first went - it was a day game against the Orioles that went 15-16 (ETA-it was only 14 innings) (the Sox lost ) and the bus that took us home broke down on the 90 mile drive back home. I hope you and your family will bring them more luck than I did back then.
The Guitar Center by Fenway is incredible. I played one of the Custom Shop Pino Palladino basses there and began contemplating dropping out of college to pay for it. There are also some really interesting music instrument shops across the street from Berklee, too. In terms of food, Back Bay is probably your best bet. If you like Middle Eastern/Kabobs there's a place called Caffe Jafa off of Newbury Street. IIRC it's a block and a half away from the original Newbury Comics. The bars on Landsdowne Street are fun if you get there early and there's a really good Mexican place past the House of Blues. I miss that city so much...
Mrs. Fingers and I were there a few years back (the day they officially retired Mike Lowell). We split a double-header with the Yanks. It was a good day. Thanks for the tips!
Take the train up to Gloucester, go on a whale watching tour. Lots of good, if not great, restaurants. Superb local seafood.
South Street Diner and the Boston Cream pancakes. I never go to Boston without having a meal at South Street and saying hello to Sol, the owner. You'll like him if you get a chance to meet him. Not only is the food awesome, it's got that authentic 50's diner car vibe. It's old and worn out in places, but it's clean. Go early. Since it's popular and open 24 hours, later in the night the party crowd starts showing up. Our routine is we take the red eye from Seattle to Boston, and when we land at 5:40AM, we go straight to South Street. Diner coffee and those Boston Cream pancakes. There are few better ways to start your day. I've only had breakfast there, so I can't recommend anything else. -Mike
I hear you about touristy stuff, but I think you should at least take 10 minutes at the harbor to tell the girls about some guys that threw off the bonds of servitude and set about making a country they could call their own.
Being a big US history buff, we have been talking about Boston history for weeks. We'll get to "thu hahbuh" for sure.
Thanks! We actually fly early in the morning.... when it's not supposed to be so beautiful. But it will be a great day to take two ridiculously intelligent and curious girls to the science museum! I love Boston. You can literally just take off walking (or get on the T and get off at a random stop) and not go wrong.
So, we booked our hotel based on reviews, location (about 100 yards from Fenway), and price. Turns out, it's a rock n roll themed hotel also about 50 yards from Guitar Center. This place is pretty cool. It's almost like Hard Rock Cafe built a hotel. A few shots of the memorabilia... and the turntable in our room run to a little Marshall speaker. They have lots of vinyl in the Lobby you can just take back to the room. (Hall and Oats was on it when we got there....but I actually like some of their stuff.) Yesterday was the Science Museum and (of course) the Duck Tour. The game is today. Yesterday we were starving after we got off the plane. So we just walked around this area looking for lunch and stumbled onto Wahlbuger. (A restaurant owned by the famous Wahlburg brothers.) My wife is a fan of all kinds of music.... including theirs.... and Mark has made some good movies.... so we went in as total tourists/fans. It was actually great food! And it wasn't tourist priced either. It was about what you would pay for a decent burger at your local sports bar. I'll probably get a chance to walk down to GC tomorrow. And old friend of mine (and drummer) who lived down in NC (we were actually roommates for a while) moved back home near Boston and we're hanging with him today at the game and after.
When my wife and I visited we really enjoyed the Harpoon brewery. They have awesome giant pretzels that hit the spot for an afternoon snack after the brewery tour.
I'll be watching the game along with you. The Red Sox are on a little streak of playing good ball. I hope you bring them good luck.
Alas, the evil White Sox triumphed...... (I grew to dislike the While Sox fans many years ago when they'd come up to Milwaukee to witness the White Sox / Brewers games. Very nasty folks. But on the other hand I really, really liked Bil Veeck. So what's a boy to do?) I hope y'all are enjoying the Land o' Cod.
Weather was PERFECT. Seats were ridiculously good. We could touch the foul line on the Green Monster from there. But for that stupid two-run homer late in the game we had mounted a good comeback. Looking down the Monstah from our seats. An old friend of mine met us at the game and this is him touching the foul line from our seats. Benny had the day of so J.D. was in left field. Again, from our seats. Loss notwithstanding, it was a great day at the park.
I was about to mention the Science Museum - our kids loved it back in the day - see you got it covered. There also used to be a Kids’ Museum down on the waterfront - it’s been a while, I guess. We used to gig in Central Sq and a place called Doyle’s. You can’t go wrong there! PS - grew up a White Sox fan on Chicago’s South Side. Go Sox ??
