    Brothers Johnson "Strawberry Letter 23"
    After you get those down, try "Glide" by Pleasure.

    These are old, but they are funky.

    Seriously, you should be able to pick up "Thank You...." by ear. Just going by memory I believe it starts out by thumping C then D on the A string, then plucking D-C-D on the G string. Listen to the record and you'll get it pretty quickly.

    "Strawberry Letter 23" is a little tougher because it's got more changes and has a lot of room for you to add your own flavor. I like to throw in a bit of syncopation and some ghost notes before some of the C-D-D#-F octave runs that are sort of the backbone of the song. I don't write tabs often, so hopefully this translates well..

    G--------------3-3-----5---7---8---10
    D-----5-3---------h5------------------
    A----------3h5-------3---5---6---8----
    E 3-3--------------------------------

    bold = thump
    italics = pluck or pop
    h=hammer

    That oughta get you started.

    Peace,

    James

    yeah I hear it called thumping and plucking vs. slapping and popping.

    Yes. Where I come from thumping is coming down on the string with you're thumb. Popping is pulling up or snapping a string with your fingers.

    BTW - Ignore my description of "Thank You...." I apparently had one too many Mike's Hard Lemonades. The song is basically octaves. I described it as fourths. The "Strawberry Letter 23" tab is pretty much how I've played it in every cover band I've ever played in since the beginning of time.

    well whats so important about it?

  13. slap is jolly good fun, but only when necessary, and you need to be good to pull it off well(ie: Wooten, Claypool, Flea, etc.). i've heard many a band where the bassist slaps is thumbs away(these are the ones who dont know the meaning of pop), and sound terrible. i enjoy slapping from time to time, but not all the time. use what suits the song, thats my opinion.

    but, back to topic, some good basic slap songs...

    My Name Is Mud - Primus
    Right on Time - Chili Peppers(not actually all slap, but slap it and its good to learn...)
    Ball Tongue - Korn(one of Fieldys better slap jobs)
    and thats all i can think of at the time...

    It's a bassist doing the complete opposite of root note rocking. It's flashy, haven't you ever watched a slap bassist's hand? It's cool. I enjoy the musical end of Slap bass, but I don't really enjoy how my friends want me to show off... like if there is a bass and/or a not so good bassist around they want me to show everyone what's up. For all my friends know, I am the next Flea.

    I just want to be able to slap to have the technique down.

    Not to mention I love the sound and like the style of music so would truly like to be able to play as such :)
