One thing I need to do more is transcribe walking lines on standard jazz tunes. What are some artists I should check out to find good recordings with good bass tone that is transcription friendly?

The Benny Carter recordings I have heard have a very clean mix so that each part is very clear and defined. Also, the bass is very tasteful. The particular track I have in mind is his version of "My One and Only Love".

Dexter Gordon also has some great tunes with very defined basslines.

    Good luck

Ed Fuqua recommended "Motion", by Lee Konitz - this is a trio record - alto sax DB and drums - so you can hear the bass lines very clearly and they are all that is giving you the harmony.

Plus - these are all very solid walking lines - basic quarter notes most of the time, really teaching you how to make great walking lines ...:)
