I have a cab and I want to spray paint the tolex black or flat black.

Any good types/brands of spray paint to seek out?

    Any particular brands to avoid?

    Thanks.

Krylon Fusion will stick to plastic, which is what Tolex is.

Be sure to clean the vinyl off with a solvent really well before you spray it. There might be waxes on it that would prevent the paint from sticking.

Interesting in that there are two types of vinyl that are used. Some have the color integrated into the vinyl. This is the most common type. Others have the color painted on. You find this used a lot on car interiors.

  5. Also, keep in mind that some solvents eat certain plastics and vinyls. So, do a little test first, or just use denatured alcohol, which is pretty safe on all plastics and vinyls.

Thanks for the cleaning tips. Painting w/o proper prep is gamble.

You could look for vinyl dye- that's what is normally used when someone wants to change the color of a vinyl top and the original Tolex was vinyl top material. 'Tolex' has become a generic word, used when vinyl is used for covering amps, but most of it is just regular vinyl material, not Tolex, which is a lot more durable, doesn't stretch as easily and has a harder surface.

SEM and ColorBond are two brands of paints & dyes for this application. Be aware- the vinyl needs to be prepped properly, in order for the paint/dye to bond well and SEM has these, too.

Beware though, in my experience that Krylon Fusion is extremely high-gloss. If you are looking for a matte finish use a primer made for plastics first then spray over it.

My guess is that any good quality spray paint will for you. Krylon Fusion is meant for plastics that need to hold up to the weather and sun.

I picked up two cans of Satin Black Fusion today, "25% MORE BONUS" cans.

    Thanks everybody.
