    Hello,

I am looking for a good tube bass preamp to go with my svt-300.(bassicly the power-amp section of an SVT) I am not looking for a proffesional pre-amp like an aguilar or a demeter, i just want a simple preamp, with very little bells and whisteles, but with good tone. Nothin' fancy.

I am considering 4 right now.
    1.Ampeg SVP-Pro
    2.Ampeg SVP-BSP
    3.Trace-Elliot V-type Preamp
    4.Peavey Max Bass Preamp

Does anyone have any experience with any of these. I am sterring towards the trace, and peavey. I am concerned however with the quality of the peavey, and trace. If anyone has any experience with any of these, I would greatly appreciate your input.

    Awaiting your responses,

    Greg P

P.S. I would like to hear what you think about a 1 channel tube preamp vs. a 2 channel tube/solid-state preamp. I have to admit I love the sound when you blend the 2 channels.

  2. I've never played on the pre-amps you listed (though it's possible that they are in pre amp/power amp combos that I've played), but it can't hurt to go out to used shops and look for gear. You could probably find just the right thing (though it might take awhile) for a great price!

  3. Greg -

I have e-mailed you my review of the MAX, as requested.

Love my SVP-PRO. Can't go wrong for the money. If you want more info, email me. I won't be back until Monday, but I will return any questions you have, then.

    Thank's for all your replies.
Some questions have come to mind.

How does a preamp with (5) 12ax7 tubes in it, sound different from a preamp with (1) 12ax7 tube in it? Is the tone thicker? How is distortion affected?

    Thanks,

    Gregory P

    Hello,

I've looked at a couple reviews for the ampeg svp-pro, but I've never seen a review about the ampeg svp-bsp. Have any of you ever played it, I'm curious how it sounds.

    Sincerely,
    Reel Big Bassist

I have one of these pre amps and i have mixed feelings
it has two channels with an out for each
which is great but i have to run one of my cabs
with the distortion channel only and it is not subtle
I have ended up using the clean/mix channel into
one side of my power amp and running my two four ohm
cabs at 2 ohms. this sound pretty damn good. but
i reeeeaaaalllly wish i could run out of my clean/mix
channel to both sides of my power amp and run each cab
    seperately.
I hope that isn't all too confusing.
I would recommend the svp pro preamp lots of tubes
and two unbalanced outs. You can also pick them up
    used pretty cheaply 250- 350.
But if your looking for all out distortion bass while
having a solid fundamental tone underneath the bsp is
    your monster of choice.
