So yesterday I met this guitarist in a bar and when he heard I was bassist he asked if I could come and try in his band.. I said yeah why not. really big talk (record deal, tour set up to US... blah blah blah) well.. I let that be due to consumption of alcohol.. but the real kicker is that he said that they had excellent bassist who just had quitted... he told me her name and it was my exgf.... :scowl: (we dont get along at all..) (I know the rules, no pics no hot bass playing ex-girlfriends..) To clarify I play bass in dasputnik and we have been around for 6 years and created something of reputation here in Fünland playing our original spacerock thingy. Everything is going very smoothly for our band: "well" paid gigs, tours in russia & baltic countries, offers to european festivals and record deal offerings and such.. I am very down to earth guy and dont think that I'll ever make it "BIG" I just love playing bass and play live. So should I try with them or do you think there are bad vibes from the beginning? well thats my rant of day..
If you have a good thing going, I don't see any reason to bail on it. I suppose it just comes down to what you enjoy playing more...spacerock or thrash.
Then there's the answer to your question, my friend. Keep doing what you're doing with your current band and let the thrash band find their own player in their own time
Would you prefer to play thrash or spacerock?? It sound's pretty simple to me. Although the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" arguement could be held for your current project. You sound like you are in a pretty good band with plenty of gigs and good deals, unless things aren't going too well in that band, why leave? Also, you are correct. No pics, no girlfriend!!
In anycase I'm not gonna leave my current band. I think I'll go to the thrash bands place for trials.. Since teen I have wanted to play in thrash metal band BTW How is the music scene in down under?
The local music scene is pretty good down here...even for the metal scene. Quite a large number of local metal bands pulling in decent crowds and even scoring some impressive international support slots. The live shows are always worth the $10 entry haha. What I'm finding a nice boom of recently is the progressive music scene. Sydney and Melbourne in particular have a large number of progressive rock, post-rock, psychadelic rock etc etc bands which are constantly doing rounds between cities. Honestly, a lot of these bands are playing international quality music...yet, sadly, they don't get the exposure necessary to really branch out apart from their respective towns.
I have lived in both Sydney and Melbourne and IMO, Melbourne is where it kicks the most butt. Sydney started to improve a couple years ago, but Melbourne is still the home of music. Just getting back into the Melbourne scene myself, playing in a groove/thrash metal band at the moment. Just getting our stuff together now and hope to be gigging in the next 6 months.
Well I have been in contact with their BL and he was talking that they are soon going to record demo.. He was saying that they had talked with the band and the they aren't really sure if I should pay for the studio too.. I just said to him that I haven't yet been in to single one practise and we don't know if I would even fit in etc.. I think that slow and steady is better than being rushed into something.. I think that I call it quits because as I previously stated that I already play in a well functioning band and I do have fulltime job too so two active gig playing bands is just a bit too much time wise and I really don't see I can put enough effort/input for the thrash band. (plus the ex-gf thingy is a bit too much for my head... ) I think that metal scene in Finland is well enough so they will find motivated bassist who can give them the time and effort they deserve.
Replacing your ex in a band? Sounds like the kind of drama that can generate gossip and publicity. Give it a shot!
