There are some literally amazing series of graphic novels out there - my all-time favourite series was the Sandman, but Alan Moore has done some great stuff. His "From Hell" is incredibly literary and quite shocking - and while the subject of Jack the Ripper has been done to death, his "take" on it is entirely unexpected and "difficult" reading - especially in what is basically a comic.

But I hesitate to recommend it here as it is fairly pornographic, although not in a prurient way - difficult to explain!!
